Joe FitzPatrick, MSP for Dundee City West and I are calling on the UK Government to completely and immediately halt the roll out of Universal Credit in Scotland.
The Scottish Government wrote to the UK Government this week and raised urgent concerns of how Universal Credit is pushing people further into hardship and debt.
I was shocked and concerned to hear that in the areas that this has already been rolled out, new claimants are having to wait six weeks before receiving their first payment. This is resulting in tenants building up rent arrears, and being pushed to seek crisis and hardship payments.
I am of the understanding that in some areas now, there are landlords who are specifying ‘No UC’ in their advertisements due to their experience with the system. This is resulting in our poorest and most vulnerable in society being pushed into an even harder position when trying to acquire a property.
My colleague, Joe FitzPatrick MSP, also commented on the matter:
“It is clear that the Universal Credit system is not working. Despite the UK government having these issues highlighted in the pilots for Universal Credit and by councils, charities, housing associations and parliamentarians, absolutely no meaningful reassurance has been received.
“I do not think it is credible for the UK Government to continue with the further roll out of Universal Credit until all the problems that have been highlighted are resolved.”
