LOCAL MSPS BACK SCOTTISH DATA SCIENCE SECTOR
SHONA ROBISON & JOE FITZPATRICK CALL FOR DUNDEE TO TAKE LEADING ROLE IN SCOTTISH DATA INDUSTRY AHEAD OF PUBLIC DATA JAM
Local MSPs, Shona Robison and Joe FitzPatrick, have pledged their support to Dundee and Scotland’s growing data science and research sector.
The Dundee MSPs are now calling for their local city to take a world leading role in the growing Scottish data industry; capitalising upon the potential in Scottish industry and applying best practice to enhance local services.
The call comes ahead of the Dundee Public Data Jam event taking place this weekend as part of Scotland’s DataFest 2018.
Last week, Ms Robison and Mr FitzPatrick visited the University of Dundee to meet with representatives from The Data Lab, an innovation centre dedicated to growing the Scottish data industry which works in collaboration with Scottish universities. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the University of Dundee, Chris Waracle - CEO of Dundee video-games company, Waracle - as well as two Data Science & Engineering students. A range of topics relating to the growing potential in the Scottish data industry were discussed.
Commenting, MSP for Dundee City East, Shona Robison said:
“Joe FitzPatrick and I had a genuinely inspiring meeting with The Data Lab.
“It was fascinating to learn about the exciting opportunities open to Scotland in data science and research which are being strengthened by the collaboration between The Data Lab and Scotland's universities. The application of data could have immense benefits in running local public services, which is very exciting for local authorities such as Dundee City Council.
“There is a huge opportunity open to Dundee to capitalise on innovations in data science and research. Dundee is already internationally renowned for its leading role in the video-game and technology sectors. We should all get behind initiatives to support Dundee becoming Scotland’s data city.”
MSP for Dundee City West, Joe FitzPatrick MSP, added:
“It is currently a very exciting time for the City of Dundee. Having two world class Universities working in collaboration The Data Lab to innovate and develop new data science shows how much talent we have in the City.”
The Dundee Public Data Jam is being held as part of Scotland's DataFest 2018. The event is a collaboration between Abertay University, Wittin and Dundee City Council and will be held on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th March.
The event will offer a chance the local council to explore opportunities with data scientists, games developers and ethical hackers to benefit the running of local services - and includes a public data hack.
