DEVELOPMENT OF GUIDELINES ON SEXUAL OFFENCES WELCOMED BY SHONA ROBISON MSP
31 Oct 2018
NEW GUIDELINES TO BE DEVELOPED BY SCOTTISH SENTENCING COUNCIL
MSP for Dundee City East, Shona Robison, has welcomed the publication of the Scottish Sentencing Council’s Business Plan 2018-19, which includes plans to develop guidelines on sexual offences.
The Scottish Sentencing Council was launched in 2015 under the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010, with an aim of establishing sentencing guidelines for the Scottish legal system.
Ms Robison had previously met with the Scottish Sentencing Council in September to discuss the process through which guidelines for sentencing on sexual offences against children could be established.
The Dundee East MSP has also encouraged the Sentencing Council to consider holding a wider public consultation in Dundee, in response to the Our Kids Need Justice campaign led by the Evening Telegraph.
Commenting, Shona Robison MSP said:
“I welcome the news that the Scottish Sentencing Council is to begin the process of developing sentencing guidelines for sexual offences. Tackling these horrific crimes must be an absolute priority and guidelines could provide better consistency in sentencing.
“The process through which these guidelines are developed must be rigorous, and the correct processes must be followed to ensure that the independence of the judiciary is preserved. We must ensure that the right guidelines are developed which will help to ensure justice for victims.
“I look forward to hearing more about the Scottish Sentencing Council’s progress.”
The Scottish Sentencing Council’s Business Plan 2018-19 also outlines ambitions to develop guidelines for the sentencing of young people, causing death by driving, environmental crimes and wildlife crimes.
