CHARITIES AND POLITICIANS JOIN TO CONDEMN “DISGRACEFUL” TWO-CHILD CAP
SNP: IF TORIES REFUSE TO SCRAP HARMFUL POLICY, POWERS MUST BE DEVOLVED
SNP politicians and third sector organisations have joined together to condemn the “disgraceful” two-child benefit cap, and call on the Westminster government to scrap the policy altogether – rather than forcing a further 150,000 Scottish children into poverty.
In a letter to Amber Rudd, front-line services such as Rape Crisis Scotland, One Parent Families Scotland, and Citizen’s Advice, alongside politicians, call on the Minister for Work and Pensions to scrap the two-child cap so that parents are not forced to make the heart-breaking choice of feeding their children, heating their home or falling into poverty.
Last week, the UK government was forced into an embarrassing climb-down on the controversial extension of the two-child benefit cap last week.
The SNP have warned that this move creates an morally unacceptable “two-tier system” for families, with some families receiving payment for a third child and some families forced to go without – depending on when the child was born.
Alison Thewliss MP said:
“My SNP colleagues at Westminster and Holyrood will not allow this damaging policy to be swept under the rug, as George Osborne attempted over four years ago.
“Amidst the chaos of Brexit, it is important that we don’t forget the people who will be affected by the Tories’ damaging welfare cuts. Given the concessions that the Secretary of State has made, I hope that she will do the right thing and accept that the only way to deal fairly and properly with this inconsistency is to scrap the two-child policy for everyone.
“The SNP will continue putting pressure on the UK government in the hope that they eventually start putting the needs of the poorest in society above the demands of the hard-right Tory cohort.”
Shona Robison MSP said:
“The two-child cap system has forced households across the UK into poverty, debt and destitution – it is absolutely essential that Amber Rudd scraps this absolutely disgraceful policy.
“If the Tories are not willing to scrap this disgraceful policy for everyone, then they should devolve the powers to the Scottish Parliament so we can build a truly fair and equal social security system that meets Scotland’s needs and values.”
