Shona Robison MSP is urging Dundee’s employers to use a charity’s toolkit which has been produced to help organisations break down barriers facing jobseekers or employees who are Deaf or have a hearing loss.
The MSP for Dundee City East is backing Action on Hearing Loss Scotland’s Working for Change campaign influencing businesses to provide person-centred communication support for prospective and current deaf or hard of hearing staff.
The charity’s Employers’ Guide, which can be downloaded from www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/employers, was developed in response to the charity’s research findings showing more than half of survey respondents were mocked or teased about their deafness in their workplace, and more than a third felt bullied by colleagues.
Shona Robison said: “I welcome Action on Hearing Loss’s Employers’ Guide and encourage employers in Dundee to use the toolkit which provides best practice examples demonstrating the ease and value of recruiting prospective employees and supporting existing staff who are deaf or hard of hearing to thrive in the workplace.
“I commend the guide for local businesses as a useful resource in highlighting many small and inexpensive adjustments that can be made to job application processes, workplaces layouts and communication methods to enable deaf colleagues to fulfil their career potential.”
Alan Dalziel, Action on Hearing Loss Scotland’s Senior Communications Manager, said: “We appreciate Shona Robison MSP’s support for our toolkit and look forward to engaging with employers in Dundee to ensure they are fully aware of the importance of providing support which meets individual communication needs, so that talented colleagues can be recruited and continue to stay in employment for longer to achieve their aspirations.”
